With Roe v. Wade being stripped away at the federal level, many women are at risk for being forced to carry unwanted pregnancies. Many of these women know they never want to have children.
However, many doctors won't perform surgeries that will allow and help women to achieve a permanent birth control option.
What is a Tubal ligation?
"Tubal ligation — also known as having your tubes tied or tubal sterilization — is a type of permanent birth control. During tubal ligation, the fallopian tubes are cut, tied or blocked to permanently prevent pregnancy." Read more from the Mayo Clinic.
Women who seek permanent sterilization are often faced with sexist questions or even required to bring their husbands to the office so the doctor knows he truly gave permission for the procedure.
These Doctors know what's up!
Dr. Jenaya Calderilla agrees that the field of women's health needs to get with the times. Her latest tik tok video is encouraging OBGYNs (Obstetrician-Gynecologists) to perform the surgery on patients who ask for it. Watch the video!
As a sexual health educator, I can tell you with certainty that people are really good at making decisions for their own bodies when they are given comprehensive education and support.
Dr. Franziska is also compiling a list of doctors who are open to performing a tubal ligation on any patient, 18-21 and older without requiring them to have a certain marital status or number of children already. Here is the full list!
Please keep in mind that the list is crowd sourced, meaning people are continuously adding to it based on their personal experience with the doctor. Doctors are also adding themselves to the list, but that does not guarantee the doctor will perform surgery. They will still discuss all your birth control options. This list is a resource to help you find a physician who may help in a more timely manner.
